Things to do in Czech Republic
The temperature in November is in the Czech Republic usually low. But this November is warmer as the previous months were as well. It is a great opportunity to enjoy the upcoming events. Celebrate with us St. Martin Feast and Velvet Revolution, watch student movies or join the crowds in the stadium to see the world best tennis or footbal. Here are the best things to do in Czech Republic November 2018.
FESTIVAL OF FREEDOM – CELEBRATIOIN OF THE VELVE REVOLUTION – NARODNI TRIDA, PRAGUE – 17.11.2018
It sounds like a dream, but it´s already 29 years since we live again in a democratic country. Communist ruled in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1989. Student revolution on November 17th, 1989 was brutally repressed by the communist police in Narodni Trida in the center of Prague. Massive protests during the followed days brought us the freedom again. At that time, I was only nine years old, but I remember the atmosphere of town squares full of people chanting the name of our first post-communist president Vaclav Havel.
We commemorate this important day every year as the national holiday. And what other place than Narodni Trida should be the place of this celebrations. On November the 17th since 10:00 am Narodni Trida will be closed. You will have a chance to enjoy many concerts, performances of several theaters or reading from the books of famous Czech writers. Concerts will continue in the night in the Rock Cafe club and also outside at the Wenceslas Square.
Join us to celebrate our freedom.
GASTRO & TRADITIONS
CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING – MASARYKOVO NAMESTI, BRNO – 23.11.2018
Today temperatures are reaching almost twenty degrees. But the shopping centers are already attracting people to start to buy the Christmas presents. I like Christmas, but I hate to be reminded in October, that I should start to think about the Christmas. I believe that this should be punishable by imprisonment 😊
But for sure, I will join the crowds and will come to Masarykovo Namesti in Brno on Friday 23rd November at 5 pm. I want to see the lighting of one of the biggest Chrismas tree in the Country. This day also means a start of the Advent markets. Therefore you will have a chance to taste grilled sausages, traditional Czech sweet Trdelnik or drink a cup of the mulled wine. And maybe you can start to buy your Christmas presents.
ST. MARTIN FEAST – NAPLAVKA RASINOVA NABREZI, PRAGUE – 11.11.2018
Very traditionally, the 11th of November is a day, when people open a new young wine of the latest harvest. And very traditionally, there must be served a baked goose.
You have many opportunities on this day to enjoy the great feast in a Czech style. You can go to a restaurant because most of them make their own St. Martin Feast. Rather book the place in advance. This event becomes more and more popular every year. Or you can enjoy this day in a public place. Naplavka at the bank of the Vltava river is a good choice. Come here on Sunday, and you can taste great wine. Be aware, that the harvest was really unique in 2018. We can look forward to an excellent sweet wine. Traditional Czech music will make the atmosphere more friendly.
FAMU FESTIVAL – FESTIVAL OF STUDENTS MOVIES – BIO OKO, PRAGUE – 06.11. – 10.11.2018
Every year, students of Prague Film Academy (FAMU) organize this festival to present their latest work. Come to see the movies, documents, and experiments. The theme of this year is the BRIDGES. Those that connect people and provide new paths. The festival is a place to connect artists across different disciplines.
Czech cinematography has a long tradition and „Czech New Wave“ from the sixties has a great name in the world. Will this year of the FAMU fest bring new names? Such names as famous Czech directors Forman or Chytilova? Or will appear this year somebody like Jan Sverak? He is the winner of the student Oscar and later the winner of the Oscar for the best foreign language film from 1997.
Here is my favorite scene from Milos Forman Amadeus (8 Oscars). Hopefully, we will see more like this in the future.
If you are keen to see the new Czech talents, Czech the program in advance on the official FAMU Festival web page.
